Brazil and China Strengthen Intellectual Property Cooperation with New Agreements

On May 13, 2025, during President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s official visit to China, Brazil and China signed two memorandums of understanding (MoUs) to enhance bilateral cooperation in the field of intellectual property (IP). These agreements aim to bolster the protection of IP rights and promote economic growth in both nations.

Broad IP Cooperation

The first MoU, signed between Brazil’s National Institute of Industrial Property (INPI) and China’s National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), establishes a framework for comprehensive cooperation in IP. The agreement focuses on improving IP protection and fostering economic development through mutual collaboration.

Protection of Geographical Indications

The second MoU, between INPI and China’s State Administration for Market Regulation, concentrates on the protection of geographical indications (GIs). This agreement aims to safeguard consumers and GIs, while establishing a consistent channel for the exchange of information, knowledge, and experiences.

Implications for Innovation and Trade

These agreements signify a mutual commitment to innovation and economic development. Enhanced cooperation in IP and GI protection is expected to encourage innovation, protect regional products, and strengthen bilateral trade relations.
